Biography

George Bell was born around 1777 (calculated from his gravestone). The 1841
census says he was born in Scotland (not Kirkcudbrightshire, as his children
were). He was trained as a stone mason. In 1801 he was named as the father
of James Bell, the illegitimate son of a farmer's daughter named Elizabeth
Brown. James' 1881 census says he was born in Dunscore, Dumfries. This is
what makes me think that George may have been born in Dumfriesshire.

Around 1802 George married Janet Jardine and moved to Kirkcudbrightshire.
The Jardines moved from Dumfriesshire to Kirkcudbrightshire as well, and I'm
not sure where the couple was married. Janet was the daughter of James
Jardine and Mary Johnston. Her 1851 census says she was born in Johnstone,
Dumfries. Her parents moved to Cum(p)ston near Kirkcudbrightshire.

The Bells moved around Kirkcudbright for several years, living in Twynholm,
Stell, and Cum(p)ston before finally settling in Kirkcudbright. All of
their children were baptized in Twynholm. The children were:

a) Andrew, born Oct 16, 1803; died Oct 30, 1803
b) Mary, bp March 3, 1805
c) Jane, bp Nov 1, 1807
d) Sarah, bp March 9, 1810; died May 12, 1834 in Kirkcudbright
e) Janet, bp April 18, 1813; may have emigrated to the US with her children
f) William, bp April 26, 1816; may have emigrated to the US and died in
California
g) Margaret, b Jan 26, 1820; married David Brackenridge
h) George Jr., bp May 6, 1822; died July 29, 1839 in Kirkcudbright
i) Andrew, bp Oct 6, 1824; emigrated to the US and married Harriet Houghton
Lane in Boston, Massachusetts on June 3, 1858; died in Chelsea,
Massachusetts.
j) John, bp July 18, 1828; may have emigrated to the US and worked as a
gold miner in California

George apparently ran a tavern or inn on the side, as well as doing
mason-work. In the 1841 census for Kirkcudbright, George's occupation is
listed as "Mason and Spirit Dealer". George died in Kirkcudbright on Oct 8,
1842. His wife Janet and daughter Jane continued to run the inn after
George's death. Janet herself died on Sept 29, 1861 in Kirkcudbright.
