Notes for Benjamin (1) GREEN
Veteran of Revolutionary War, having served in the Westchester County Militia.
1078Benjamin Green probably owned the tract of land shown in the upper left corner of the map “Original Farms of the Reservation” just below the “G” in “Great South Lot #9” in the map ”AveryPoundRidgeMap.jpg”, part of source:
1155 , but the owner’s name has been partially obscured. If so, then this is probably the land upon which he founded the “Avery/Green Cemetery” near Pound Ridge. This cemetery has also been known as the Green Family Burying Ground, The Avery Cemetery, and several other names. The first interment was 1809.
1078There is another tract of land owned by a Benjamin Green within the Poundridge Reservation. That property is shown just southeast of John Avery’s Farm #7 on the map “Original Farms of the Reservation”. See map ”AveryPoundRidgeMap.jpg”, part of source:

Research notes for Benjamin (1) GREEN
The name Benjamin GREEN is significant in the Avery family history because of:
- He resided physically close to several members of the Pound Ridge Avery clan
- He is buried in a cemetery near Pound Ridge which is sometimes referred to as the Avery cemetery, but is better referred to as the the Green/Avery cemetery because it was founded by Benjamin GREEN.
- There is at least one AVERY man named Benjamin Green Avery which mighyt indicate a close familial relationship.
There were, apparently, only two men named Benjamin Green in Westchester County NY during the latter half of the 1700’s.
1 - Benjamin GREEN of Pound Ridge, who appears in the 1790, 1800, and 1810 census as being physically close in enumeration sequence to the Pound Ridge Averys, notably Elisha, John, Ebeneezer, Enoch and Solomon. This would be the Benjamin Green who resided in Pound Ridge on land adjacent to John Avery and is buried in a Green/Avery cemetery near Pound Ridge with other members of the Pound Ridge Avery clan.
2 - Benjamin GREEN of Stephen Town, Westchester Co., NY. He was an Innkeeper, constable and (tax?) collector for Stephen Town. He was instrumental in the early days of Stephen Town as many of the Town meetings were held in his home. The town of Stephen no longer exists having been partly absorbed by the town of New Castle and the remainder was renamed as Somers.
