AVERY, Howard Shaeffer, 90, of Mahwah, N.J., died Saturday, August 24, 1996. Born in Canon City, Colo., on April 18, 1906, he lived in Roanoke, Va., from 1917 to 1933. He married Mary Louise Steele of Roanoke in 1931, and lived in Mahwah from 1935 until his death. He is survived by his children, Mary Avery Gerlach and her husband, Richard, of Winthrop, N.Y., Byrd Avery Lochtie of Eureka, Calif., Howard Shaeffer (''Shae"") Avery Jr. and his wife, Gwenda, of Marietta, Ga., and Giles Alexander Avery of Mahwah; his nephew, Jon Avery of West Chester, Pa.; eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Steele Avery, in 1985, and by his brother, Robert D. Avery, and his son-in-law, Robert M. Lochtie. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park,
