Frances Didcoct Snyder Avery POTTSTOWN, Pa. — Frances Didcoct Snyder Avery, 92, a former resident of DeLand, died March 19, 2003, at Paoli Memorial Hospital in Paoli, Pa. Graveside services and interment will be April 24 in Evergreen Burial Park in Roanoke, Va. She will rest next to her beloved late husband, Robert De La Vergne Avery. Late in the 19th century, Mrs. Avery's grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Snyder, received a land grant from President Benjamin Harrison for a chunk of land in DeLand and Orange City. Family lore says Mr. Snyder lived in DeLand and grew oranges here, until this enterprise was ruined by the same severe freezes of the 1890s that dashed the fortunes of Henry A. DeLand.

Mrs. Avery was bom Feb. 19, 1911, in Manhattan, N.Y, and she and her family moved to DeLand when she was a young girl. However, they stayed here only briefly before relocating to Roanoke in 1921.

After receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Harrisonburg (Va.) State Teachers College (now called James Madison University), Mrs. Avery had a lifetime career in teaching in the public schools of Roanoke and of Ridgewood, N.J.

She married in 1936 and later received her Master of Arts degree from New York University.

Mrs. Avery retired in the 1970s and returned to DeLand, where she lived in a home she built on Willow Lane. She became a Democratic precinct committee-woman on the Volusia County Democratic Executive Committee and volunteered in several political campaigns.

She also worked with a local theater group and was active in the American As-sociation of University Women in DeLand. She also was a member of the New Jersey Education Association and the National Education Association.

Mrs. Avery moved from DeLand to Pennsylvania in the early 1990s.

She was preceded in death in 1949 by her husband, Robert. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Cheryl Avery of Pottstown; her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Lee and Tom Bailey of Abingdon, Va., and her granddaughters, Shawn Marie Camell of Reston, Va., and Darilyn Anne Avery of St. Peters, Pa.

Memorial donations may be made to the Algonquin Foundation (with "for education" in the memo portion of the check), Darilyn Anne Avery, Trustee, P.O. Box 82, St. Peters PA 19470. The Cremation Society of Pennsylvania in King of Prussia was in charge.
